Music Meme: A Song That Makes You Think of Fall

Fall is a harder season than summer. There's not an awful lot of music about this season. More to the point, Fall wasn't something I experienced at length until I moved to Virginia. In Colorado it lasts about three weeks and in Southern California it's almost entirely non existent.

When I think of Fall, I think of things slowing down a bit. I think of that cozy warmth you get from sweaters and blankets, which is entirely different from the kind of warmth that accompanies a summer BBQ. So here are some songs that invoke some of those same feelings in me.

Almost anything Suzanne Vega sings has that warm cozy feeling associated with it. Here's one of my favorite songs of hers, Gypsy

Tom Waits also has a good Fall voice. I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You has been popping up on one of my Pandora stations a lot lately, so it's the first song that comes to mind.

  1. I have many of the same issues with fall. Until I moved to Pittsburgh, I had no concept of this season. In California fall is the occasionally rainy, slightly darker brother to summer that also holds playoff baseball and the meat of the football season. Fall is also the time of all my favorite holidays: Thanksgiving, Halloween, and my birthday. Despite my relative newness to fall, it is by far my favorite season. I feel I need to do it justice, so this will be a bit long and rambly.

My birthday reminds me of a very particular song: Birthday by the Beatles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_Nz9B1XFio. In my family we always call each other on our birthdays and play that song over the phone. It's a tradition I love, but Birthday doesn't really make me think of fall so much as it makes me think of birthdays. Also, if I pick another seasonal Beatles song then I'll start the kind of trend I would want to finish. So let's skip that one.

I think I'm going to have to go with The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan. Fall is a time of change, a time to reflect on what we accomplished during the year as we move into its close. For kids it means the coming of a new school year, always rife with change. Bob Dylan is among my favorite artists ever and may be my favorite lyricist. This year of heated political discourse brings these particular lyrics to mind:

    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don't stand in the doorway
    Don't block up the hall

I love this song so much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCWdCKPtnYE

    1. Excellent choice

I can choose a seasonal Beatles song without making you want to continue the trend, right? I may have one of those coming
