Which musical instruments did you used to play?
Like everyone else in my elementary school, I had to learn to play the recorder. I actually still have it somewhere, I believe. And I spent a year playing clarinet in the school band, but I gave it in up middle school so I could take Spanish. My school didn't really support being in band and doing anything else. I don't currently play any musical instruments.
What's your favorite musical instrument?
It's a tie between the fiddle and the banjo. With the cello as a close second. The fiddle is incredibly versatile (and okay, is more a method of playing an instrument than an instrument in its own right, but I don't care). It can be upbeat or mournf
I love stringed instruments, and I especially love listening to them play off each other. One of my favorite bands is Crooked Still, unsurprisingly because they have a fiddle, a banjo, and a cello. Enjoy their cover of this traditional folk song, The Dreadful Wind and Rain
As a child I played the obligatory musical instruments, recorder, violin, I even threw in some trombone for a week or two. Bottom line is, I have no musical talent whatsoever, so that ship has pretty much sailed. If there was a musical instrument that I could play, I would want it to be the drums, I love me some drums. While not my favorite instrument, they are a very close second, if only I could do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nmOMo4OPi4. I'd also like to be able to play the dideridoo, because it's just cool.
ReplyDeleteFavorite musical instrument is the bass. My best friend growing up is an incredible bass player, one of the best I've ever heard, so for me bass has a very special place in my memory. As a result of his skill and love of the instrument, I have been listening to great bass for years: Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Les Claypool to name a few. Jazz and fusion bass were on my speakers almost as much as metal was when I was in high school, I love it. Here is some Jaco to take you out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgntkGc5iBo
So I started with Piano ~ age 5. I continued official lessons until maybe sophomore year of high school? I wasn't half bad, although not half-good either. I took up percussion in 4th grade and continued until the end of middle school. As the only percussionist who could read music (thanks piano experience) I pretty much got stuck on the bells/xylophone/marimba/vibraphone for all of that time, although I did some snare lessons thinking I might do marching band someday. Eventually high school sports beat my music out.
ReplyDeleteFavorite instrument has got to be the grand piano, and not even because I played it. It just has so much versatility. It is one of the few instruments that can play multiple notes at the same time. It is one of the only instruments (ok other keyboard instruments too) where you can play every note on it without not-playing some other note on it. You can play 2 completely different ranges at the same time. 2 people can play it and get 4 ranges. They duel. They're made of motherfucking elephants. I mean really, what's not to like?
Sadly we only owned a standup piano growing up, which just don't quite sound the same. And my grandfather's grand piano was really old and not necessarily really well maintained. It is only unfortunate that electric keyboards are so popular now for learning keyboard because they really just don't do music justice.
