Music Meme: First and Favorite Concerts

The first concert I remember was The Backstreet Boys when I was 13. It was basically just a bunch of screaming girls, but my dad did manage to score seats in the second row for my best friend and me. I don't remember much about the concert, but I did have a lot of fun at it.

My favorite concert was Muse, who I got to see during college. It was notable because I actually managed to stay and have fun for the entire concert. Usually I get claustrophobic and have to leave early, which is really sad. I've stopped going to concerts, because it always ends up being a waste of money. I'll enjoy one song, then get progressively more uncomfortable until I have to leave to wait in the lobby. But Muse played at a fairly small, outdoor stadium, so I didn't feel overwhelmed by the crush of people. The simple fact that I enjoyed the entire concert makes it my favorite.

  1. The first concert I ever attended was The Village People, they were playing before a Giants baseball game and my dad thought it would be fun(ny) to see them. The first concert that I attended of my own volition was Weird Al. I went with some friends of mine when I was 13. It was, needless to say, amazing, and I am fairly certain played a large roll in my love of concert going.

I touched on this in an earlier post, but I go to a lot of concerts; through a combination of local shows and festival attendance I estimate I have seen upwards of 500 bands live since I started going to concerts. As a result this question, like so many others, is hard to answer. I will attack this in a list.

First Favorite Concert: Marilyn Manson - Ozzfest 2001
Best Small Venue Concert: Primus - The Greek Theater 2004
Best Mid-sized Indoor Venue Concert - Muse - Can't remember the name of the venue 2005
Concert I Will Always Pay to See - Girl Talk
Band I Always Wanted to See that Lived Up to Expectations the Most - Tool - Staples Center 2006
Favorite Band Who Is Still Alive and Rocked My World - Rage Against The Machine - Coachella 2007, Vegoose 2007
    Best Concert(s) Ever - Daft Punk - Staples Center 2007, Vegoose 2007

Best Concert Year Ever: 2007. Seeing Daft Punk and Rage Against the Machine twice each in the same year is the sort of concert going feat that I will probably never match. I do not exaggerate when I say that Daft Punk's 2006-2007 tour is probably the best live show that there has ever been. For more on the show, I direct you to this Pitchfork review of their Alive 2007 album: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/10925-alive-2007/ and this full concert video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH3Ne5Nv2tc. You are welcome.

  2. Alright, definitely a little behind on these, but here goes -

First concert - unknown. One of my mom's choral concerts. My dad might have even still been singing back then too.
First non-choral/orchestral concert - 2002 HFStival, day 2. In retrospect most of the bands there were not that good, but I did enjoy Good Charlotte and Sum 41. I missed the day 1 stampeded that left 30 some people somewhat injured during eminem.
Favorite concert - 2004 HFStival. First time I saw Jimmie's Chicken Shack live (not on the main stage) plus had fought my way to the front of the crowd for Jay-Z and the Offspring.
Favorite concert for reasons other than the music - 2003 Summer Sanitarium tour with Linkin Park and Metallica. I won't explain why.

Coincidentally I also very much enjoyed a mid-sized indoor venue Muse concert at the Patriot center one summer during the latter half of college.
