Super Weekend

I am so far behind on this blog. But I swear I'm going to catch up. Eventually.

Our annual Super Bowl party was far more epic this year than it has been in years past. We may have invited too many people, but we were at least able to find seating for everyone. Mostly. And there was so much food that I was eating leftovers for the rest of the week. Feeding everyone has never been a problem for us.

The weekend actually began Saturday night, though, when I decided to host an old-fashioned sleepover. Kevin went down to Zach's and some friends came over for dinner, movies, and games. We've been doing bimonthly* lady's nights, which have been a ton of fun. And this way I could host without worrying about everyone getting home after a night of drinking. We had a lot of fun watching Magic Mike XLL and almost every music video Beyonce has released.

In the morning we made breakfast, which is actually one of my favorite meals to prepare for a larger group. There are so many possibilities, and since Kevin only occasionally eats breakfast, I rarely get to make anything elaborate. I seize every opportunity I have. After breakfast we played games, watched Magic Mike XXL again, and slowly people started to trickle in for the Super Bowl.

We got a pony keg and brought another couch downstairs to accommodate everyone. People still ended up sitting on the floor, though. We just didn't quite have enough seating for the 12 or so people who came to the game. But it all worked out, and there was plenty of food and beer to keep everyone sated.

All in all it was a great party, a great game, and a great weekend.

*Apparently bimonthly means both "every other month" and "twice a month" because English is stupid. I'm using it to mean "every other month"

The Opposite of Hibernation

Traditionally, January has been a month to stay in. We don't make plans, we don't go out. We just cover ourselves with blankets and enjoy being home. But that hasn't been the case this year.

Kevin's company hold sits holiday party in January instead of December, which definitely makes it easier to fit into the schedule. It was thrown on the same day he got back from three weeks in Hawaii. So instead of spending his first night back at home, we went down to the Ritz-Carlton in Arlington. His company was generous enough to pay for the valet and provide us a steep discount on the room for the night.

The party itself was pretty spectacular. I got to meet Kevin's new colleagues and their partners. They were a fun group of people, and between the open bar and that fact that we were staying at the hotel we had a lot of fun. The next morning was a little rough, as Kevin was fighting both a hangover and jet lag. It took us a while to get home, but the night was well worth it.

That Sunday, Zach and Sarah came over to watch the Seahawks and the Redskins in the first playoff games of the season. We had a lot of fun playing games and drinking beer while we watched football. And even though Washington lost, they made it further than I could have hoped for at the beginning of the season.

The next weekend we had planned to host one of my high school friends who was going to be in town for a funeral. I was looking forward to seeing her, but due to a mixup she had to cancel at the last minute. Instead we went down to Zach and Sarah's for another evening of games and football.

That week my aunt was in town for business, so we went out to dinner with her one night. It's nice that her work brings her out this way as often as it does. We don't get to spend much time with her when she's in town, but we always take the opportunity to catch up. This time we went down to a tapas restaurant in Clarendon and enjoyed sangria and tapas despite the freezing weather.

All in all its been a very busy month so far. It's been fun to be as social as we have been, but it hasn't left a whole lot of time for relaxation or recuperation. It's a good thing I had so much down time over the holidays. Our schedule doesn't look to be lightening up any time soon.

Fall

Things I did this past weekend:
  • Watched football
  • Made and ate chicken stew
  • Made and ate apple crisp
  • Opened all the windows
  • Drank chai in the afternoon
  • Wore a sweatshirt to walk the dog
  • Wore jeans
  • Curled up on the couch with a blanket
This morning it was pleasantly chilly when I woke up. I bought an apple chai on the way to work. I even had to wear a sweater until I got to my office.

It's going to heat back up this week. But it seems the days of 90+ degrees are behind us. Fall is on the way. I couldn't be happier about the changing of the seasons.

Work Hard, Play Harder

Like the rest of summer, the last couple of weekends have been filled to the brim. Over Labor Day weekend, we had Zach and Sarah over for games. We finally got to play Settlers of America, a mash up between Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, sort of. I bought it for Kevin years ago. But it really only works with four people, and it takes hours to play. It was a good game, if a little long.

On Sunday we went up to Baltimore for a baseball game. Except we went early to eat burgers, drink beer, and watch a soccer game. The baseball game was long. And hot. It's been four years since the last baseball game I went to, and it will probably be another four before Kevin manages to drag me to another one. I just don't understand anything about that sport or why it appeals to people. Though I've been told that the games have gotten significantly longer in recent years. Given that, I wonder if they'll eventually start playing fewer innings, to get the length back down.

Labor Day itself was spent on the couch watching TV while I tried to finally kick a cold I've had for way too long. The cough is still lingering, something like three weeks after I first got sick. It wouldn't be so bad, except that Kevin managed to get over this damn thing in about three days.

Last weekend was filled with the Renaissance Festival and football. We all trooped out to Maryland to enjoy mead and cider and turkey legs. I bought a game I've been coveting since the last Renaissance Festival called Octiles. It's a variation on Chinese Checkers in which the path across the board is constantly changing. We also saw a short adaptation of Henry the V but Shakespeare's Skrum, which was a lot of fun.

Football was something of a mixed bag. Zach, Connor, and Kevin's mom all came over for the Redskins game, which was disappointing. They never quite seem to get their act together, and if they do it all, ultimately, falls apart. It didn't help that all of the scoring happened in roughly 3 minutes of gameplay, which resulted in a game that was both frustrating and a little boring.

But then I made nachos, which I've been looking forward to for weeks, and we watched the Niners game. The nachos were delicious, and the Niners are a much better and more exciting team than Washington. They scored in the first minute of the game and proceeded to walk all over the Cowboys.

This weekend promises yet more football (I love Fall), and some downtime. Which is good. I really need to clean out my office. It looks clean, but there's so much filing to be done. Not to mention that my bookcases are, once again, overflowing and could stand to be reorganized. I'll spare you the pictures this time.

Epic Weekend

Last weekend ended up being incredibly busy. A lot of things I'd been looking forward to all happened at the same time. It was all really fun, even if my house is still a bit of a disaster area.

On Saturday night, a group of us went to see The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring at Wolftrap. This is a special event where they pull the music track out of the movie and a live orchestra and choir perform all of the music. I got to see The Return of the King this way when I first moved to Virginia a few years ago. It's a pretty awesome experience.

We sat on the lawn, which meant we were able to bring a picnic dinner and our own wine and beer. However it also meant that we couldn't see the orchestra or the choir that was performing. Their performance was so seamless that it was easy to forget they were there at all, which made it even cooler whenever we did remember.

The performance was for only the theatrical version of the first movie, complete with an intermission to give the musicians a break. It's a good thing they didn't show the extended edition as I'm not sure we would have lasted until the end. I always forget how long these movies are until I'm actually watching them.

On Sunday a bunch of us went to Reston for the Great Grapes Wine Festival. This is basically a really big, really long wine tasting. A bunch of local wineries come and provide tastings of anywhere from 3 to 10 wines. Knowing that this would involve a bunch of drinking, we took cabs to and from the festival. Then we ordered pizza and watched the 49ers game so Zach could sober up for the drive home. After a couple of games of beer pong, that is.

The 49ers ended up doing much better than the Redskins, who played their first game of the season on Monday night. Zach and Sarah came over for the game, which was pretty disappointing. Our defense just could not get it together against the Eagles in the beginning and we let them score far too many points. Apparently we rallied in the last quarter and very nearly came back to tie it, but I had already fallen asleep by then. Next week should go better. And hopefully the week after that will go even better, as I won a pair of tickets from work. It'll be my first time actually attending a football game, so they better play well.

On Tuesday Kevin was scheduled to umpire a few games. This had completely slipped my mind until I came home to a blessedly empty house. Getting an evening all to myself was a nice surprise after the intensity of the previous few days. I made the most of it by eating scrambled eggs for dinner and falling asleep at 9:30.
